This marked the first of many painful conversations I was compelled to have with my 13-year-old son about the realities of navigating life in America as a Black teenage boy. The weight of these discussions—filled with worry, hope, and the desire to protect him—reminds me of the challenges and heartbreak that come with preparing him for a world that may not always see his worth.
