Epitaph

Mixed media on cardboard

2023

My father died, November 2022.  I found his army album while going through some of his things. One of the pages had a very small cut out of a a paragraph that read, " I am an American fighting man> I serve in the forces which guard my country's segregated schools, lunch counters, movies and neighborhoods. I am prepared to give my life in their defense ... If I am killed, (please place the following epitaph) above my head: 'Here lies a black man. / Killed by a yellow man. / Protecting a white man. / Who stole from a red man. /'"

This is in memory of my father, who served this country, and black men who lost their lives serving our country while others fought for the basic right to simply enjoy a meal at lunch counters around this country.
