Living the Dream

For generations, countless immigrant women have journeyed to the United States in pursuit of safety, opportunity, and a better future—dreams often out of reach in their countries of origin. Yet, some of these women have faced unimaginable violations while detained, including claims of involuntary sterilization—an irreversible act that strips them of their reproductive autonomy.

This is not an isolated chapter in American history. Thousands of women of color, including Native American women, have been subjected to forced sterilizations in the past—often under the guise of public health or social policy.

These practices are widely seen as rooted in systemic racism and xenophobia, ideologies that continue to cast a long shadow today.
