Sunday Night BBQ

Mixed media on cardboard

2020

This was inspired by a postcard I ran into while searching the web for historic photos. The postcard read, "This is the barbecue we had last night. My picture is to the left with a cross over it your son Joe."

The lynched teenager was a  seventeen year old African-American farmhand in Waco, Texas named Jesse Washington on May 15, 1916. A professional photographer was at the event printed and sold postcards of the horrific image.
